I've already finished my blog
I've already finished my blog tonight but I went surfing and decided to add this tidbit. Last Sunday, when I was talking to my friend at the coffee shop, we chatted about religion. I did a really weird thing. About 2 years ago I got confirmed in the Catholic church; something that I had long wished I had done and that was very important to me. The odd thing is...once I did it I became really disenchanted with the formal Catholic Church. I find they are more and more about throwing out the baby and holding sacred the bathwater. My main fixation is who can and who cannot become a priest these days. That one can't be a woman is bad enough, but that one can't be married is completely assinine...especially when you consider that the decision to make all priests celibate was more of a political decision than a spiritual one.
Through our conversation I mentioned that there was a priest in my childhood that was a friend of our family in addition to be a really good priest. I really liked him as a person as well as a priest. He later left the priesthood and married another friend of the family and consequently lost touch with us. Julia suggested I contact him and discuss my issues with him as he has lived with the dilemmas about which I wonder. A great idea I think...although it might freak him out a bit to speak so candidly about something that may still be really personal for him.
I have looked in NYC for a "new age" or "enlightened" Catholic church but to no avail. Well, I was surfing online and found this website dedicated to married priests. There is even a section that mentions when women were disallowed to be priests. How can you disallow something that was never allowed to begin? Hmm. It seems that our Catholic ancient history has a lot to tell us. I don't know how reputable this site is...but it is encouraging to know that they are out there. I may just look up one of these married priests for a chat.
