Twice in One Week I
Twice in One Week
I saw The Elephant Man yesterday. My lovely friend Bill Cannon got me a ticket. We were on the third row, center aisle. The seats were great and the play was brilliant in a way that I truly still need a moment to absorb all of the things I thought and felt within the space of those two hours. More on E-Man later. After the show I realized I had a rather flimsy excuse to encourage Bill to take me backstage. He knows one of the costumers for the show and I was thinking she could design my MOH dress or at least suggest someone who might be interested. So we went back stage. The way the buildings were set up we ended up going into the behind-the-seens enclave of Edward Albee's The Goat (running next door) and the ever-playing Phantom of the Opera. It was magical to be back there I tell you. Suddenly we were stage left in The Elephant Man's theatre. Literally on stage left. Out of the corner of my right eye I caught a glimpse of someone loping down the stairs in the carefree, jovial manner of a man who just finished a show, who wanted to breathe a little before the next curtain that night at 8:00. It was the show's Tony-nominated star, Billy Crudup. Oddly, this was the second time this week our paths have crossed. Last Saturday night I noticed him outside of Joe Allen's with his girlfriend Mary Louise Parker.
To find this particular costumer we had to cross the stage. So there on that sunny afternoon, a blissful day in May, I crossed my first broadway stage. It was electric. If it felt this good after the show that I wasn't in, imagine how it will be when I have a more concrete reason to be there. It smelled heavenly; an aroma full of secrets and promises that seems to inhabit all theatres everywhere in one way or another. So we met the costumer, Kay, who was lovely and she did indeed give me a suggestion of who I might call. As is the way that Serendipity always seems to tease me, her referral called her cell phone at exactly that moment. I love New York.
