Keeping Up with the Times

I have been working on revamping my website for the last few weeks and the fruit of my labor, such as it is, is almost ready. I decided to buck the Dreamweaver system to try out Frontpage. I think that Frontpage is pretty user friendly, but it doesn't seem to have some of the bells and whistles Dreamweaver has. Or maybe that's because I haven't found them yet. In any event, I'm excited because this will be the first website I've built from scratch. It will have those things that have been "coming soon" for the last year or so on the current sebsite. You know the Voiceovers and the Bookkeeping page I've been promising? Well, they are there in the new and improved version of www.mermu.net.

I'm also frustrated because I don't yet have the skills to make the site on the web look as good as the site in my head. I think I am really lucky to have such a great Brother in Law who can be me my own personal www.dictionaryofcomplicatedcomputerthings.com. The next trick is getting my Movable Type Blog to look like the rest of the site.

I occasionally use DreamWeaver (I used it for the karlhub.com site) and if I had the choice between FP and DW, I'd choose DW every single time -- unless I'd need FP for its data integration features.

That's funny you mention Dreamweaver and FrontPage--there was a discussion on a mailing list I'm subscribed to just this morning about FP. It mentioned that it tends to produce very bloated code, so you want to be careful about keeping your pages small or else the load time will be long. Also be sure to test with both Netscape and IE, as someone mentioned that FP (probably b/c it's a Microsoft product) tends to have problems loading in Netscape. And I would have never heard of Dreamweaver except that someone I know through the same mailing list took a six-week class last December and produced their own family history site with it; it turned out quite well.

Looking forward to seeing the new site!
