Fighting the Man

Talk about an abuse Eminent Domain. The government of New London, Connecticut wants to evict working class people from their homes to make way for developers to build hotels and offices. I'm personally disgusted at this abuse of power. This whole idea that big business increases the general well-being of the little guy, or even the middle-class is an over-circulated myth. (There's a great article in Texas Monthly's October 2004 edition about Laura Miller's stand against Jerry Jones' quest to build a new stadium in Dallas which highlights the fallacy of a new stadium bringing revenue and property value to a community.) What does bringing a hotel to New London mean for New Londoners? More trash, more people in the area who are not invested in the welfare of the city, and the realization that their government did not only refused to protect and serve their citizens, but instead handed the "evil-doers" the hammer. It's not that I'm against tourism. I'm not even against tourism in New London. I've driven through New London a few times and it seemed like a nice place to be. What I am against is elected officials bullying the less affluent of their community so that they themselves (or their friends who buy them gifts, put them on boards, give them cushy jobs, etc,) will personally benefit. I for one will never spend a dime in New London if this goes through. Not for soda, not for gas, not for directions, not even if they kiss my A**. What I will do is call them, and send them a postcard letting them know how little I think of their sad plans and of my intention to wipe them from any map I use for that area. There are too many lovely places in Connecticut to have a vacation, to risk sullying myself with such greasy greedies.
