Hey all. I know it's

Hey all. I know it's been ages but in the words of my godmother.... "I'm just so busy!!!! Can't write tonight. Been preparing for the first ever Tex in the City night and the gestational stages of my plan for global domination. I have to say I am really proud of myself for dreaming up this name. I am excited that my partners are excited about the future and that we are agressively pursuing a successful place in the arts in New York City. So much to talk about, to share. But alas, not tonight. I am finally going to bed. I promise to write soon and, Jenny, be prepared. It will most likely be a novel. Safe and adventurous thoughts to Mom and Margaret and their loved ones who are enjoying our 50th State.

Note: The following blog should have appeared for March 14, 2002. It is only recently showing up because of technical difficulty. Blasted Blogger.

This week has been eventful, but still without work...well, at least paying work. I did have a successful "artist date". Oddly enough, I find that is the most difficult thing for me to do in my Artist's Way process. Well, that and the Reading Depravation business. That sucked! But my artist date was great this week. I have this Mendhi henna tattoo kit that my Aunt Felicia got me a long time ago. I just never got around to using it because it takes at least 6 hours to dry. Well, I mixed the ingredients last week, stored the solution in the fridge, and finally got around to using it on Tuesday. I put a design of four "aum" symbols facing outward on my right hand so that no matter what direction you looked at my hand an aum would be facing you. It turned out pretty cool I have to say. My friend Marcus immediately recognized the design. So did the guy at the Indian curry house where I ate lunch today. My friend Jim thinks it looks like a rash. What can I say? I love him in spite of his spiritual ignorance. He loves me even though I don't remember who wrote most of the lyrics for "Working" among other things...Stephen Schwartz right? I did the drawing free hand. It was pretty easy working with the henna too. I was initially afraid I wouldn't be able to move for six hours while it was drying but the henna dries pretty quickly. I was even able to wrap the design in toilet paper which did a fine job of protecting it while I slept. The color turned out really well, I must say. It is definitely visible.

Today I helped out my friends at Pangolin Pics. They are filming a series of documentaries about claustrophobia and they needed bodies to fill a room so they could film the perspective of a claustrophobe. They also picked up a bunch of people from Times Square. So we had all these tourists from all over that the PAs recruited from the TKTS booth. What a cool NY Story they get to tell when they get home. Turns out one of the groups they enlisted was from Minnesota- a college in Minnesota. I mentioned the one person I knew from Minnesota and not even her last name...and they knew her!!!! . The funny thing is, they are going to tell this girl I said hi. I wouldn't be surpprised at all if she had a small conniption fit. I know she will remember me because she was the person who dated the guy I dated on tour after I dated him...it's a long story. Let's just say the lag time between me and she wasn't alot. (To my grammatically anal family: I KNOW I used incorrect usage there. I thought it sounded more poetic so :-P !! I am still friends with the guy if you can believe. I think he will also have an interesting reaction when I mention this to him. I also met some guys from Canyon, Texas. This only proves the point about Tex In the City. Texans are everywhere and it's time we started showing the world what great people Texans are. (as opposed to some people who are idiots living in a big white house in D.C. who shall remain nameless.) Let's strive for global domination the Texas way!!! With beer, barbecue, and great music. Anybody know Matthew McConnaughey's address?

I just found a website

I just found a website about George W Bush. It is hilarious. They have these T-shirts and bumper stickers that are pretty funny. Hey, if you can't laugh at the debacle this jerk has put us in then what's the use. Two of my favorite slogans were "Don't Blame Me, I voted with the Majority" and "If you can read this you're not the President."...funny stuff ladies and gentlemen. I know that foreigners blew up some major buildings on American Soil but that doesn't mean we have to continue to punish ourselves with this frat boy President. When most GW supporters are faced with any kind of debate on the sorry state of or economy or the Enron fiasco, they inevitably use the excuse that 'it's not Bush making those decisions, it's the people under him.' WELL ISN'T THAT JUST AS BAD OR WORSE!!! Come on people! Would you rather have someone screwing an intern or screwing the country! (ok, that was another bumper sticker but would you!! )

Reading Depravation I am in

Reading Depravation

I am in Week 4 of my Artist's Way process. I am finding that the morning pages which everybody hates is not such a big deal. Especially since I wake up whenever I damn well please and I am on the dole. I guess you could say my morning pages sometimes become noon pages but I still do them as soon as I wake up. Anyway. Part of Week 4 is Reading Depravation. Basically I need to stay away from things that afford me the opportunity to tune out of the world. So it's not just reading, it's television, MindSweeper, Backgammon and whatever else people do to kill time and exit the world. Yesterday was my first day. It sucked!!! I had already made certain concessions about being on the web and doing some work...I am after all out of a job and I have to become knowledgeable in home studio recording so I can hopefully send my voice over the waves to Wichita Falls for money. Even with those concessions I caved at about 8:00 p.m. and started playing MindSweeper. Then an hour of television. Fortunately I got a call from my favorite Personal Trainer, Carl Jones and he saved me from most of my hour of evil TV.

This whole excercise really gets me thinking about how much we zone out from ourselves and the people we say we love. People can live in a house together all their lives and never spend time with each other because they are too busy spending time with the TV, or the Newspaper or whatever. The book says that it's supposed to be a difficult excercise and hopefully once you have done all the busy work of rearranging your closet, your cds, etc you will start "playing". It's an odd concept for an adult. Just "playing". I am having more trouble with this than I thought I would. I had always considered myself an easy target for the frivolous pursuits. I am finding that it isn't true. I remember when I used to put together shows for the neighbors, write plays in school that I produced, tell stories involving all of my friends and our true loves of the week at sleepovers, and play. It's an interesting thing to think about that girl I was and invite her to come back into my life. I have to say, as embarassing as it might be to do so, I miss her.

So today instead of watching TV I did some errands, bought a library card, checked out a book on designing for non-designers, and a movie, deposited my three-weeks-late-check from Taylor Gray, and bought a plant hanger thing to put up a Chinese Lantern in my room. I have had this Chinese Lantern for years. Jenny actually used it for a bit, but gave it back to me last time she was here. The guy at the hardware store even gave me the toggles. I have always had trouble with toggles but I was determined to make them work this time. For God's sake! I am a chick with her own personal Makita Drill, I should know how to use a toggle thing. So I used the toggles and put up the plant hanger with little or no problem, set up the Chinese Lantern and now my room is beautiful; awash in the glow of a soft white light! It's like a whole new room. Which got me thinking about how much the small things make a difference in our lives. An old Chinese Lantern that had lain dormant completely changed the feel of this room. Now if I could just get the clothes off the floor.

I took what turned out

I took what turned out to be a 3.5 mile jog up the main drag in Weehawken and down Boulevard East. I am so completely sore! But it was a great jog. The weather is getting really beautiful.

But they Make a

But they Make a Great Steak Dinner!
I had an interview today for a "bookkeeping position" at a company called Peregrine Enterprises. They own the Paradise club where I interviewed which is, to be somewhat oxymoronic, a "gentlemen's club". (Oxymoronic in the sense that these places have nothing to do with gentlemen.) It's really a clouded term for strip club. I knew where I was going before I agreed to the interview. And despite the preceding sentences, I was determined to keep an open mind and just see what it was. Although my first thought was that the "bookkeeper" was always the one on Law and Order they found tied to cement at the bottom of the Hudson. But my Dad always said they make a great steak dinner so....I would give it the old college try. Unfortunately, I never even got to a point where I had to wrestle with whether or not I would work in such a place. I was kept waiting for about 20 minutes. Then I was finally led down a hallway with many little doors. One doorway had a half-open curtain where you could see a small bed with red satin sheets among other things. When I got there I talked to the lady who currently held the position. She was a lovely older woman of what I think was Russian descent. Instead of interviewing me she proceeded to introduce me to the basic tasks that would be required. I felt more like I was being trained for a position than interviewed for one. Then she mentioned the position was more of a manager /bookkeeping position. I would be responsible for inventory, check outs etc. etc. She seemed pretty keen on me taking the job. Then it came to light that the man who would make the decision wasn't around. He had "stepped out" and she didn't know when he would be back. Well that was all I needed to hear. The man was wasting my time and I didn't even work for him yet. I don't think so. But it was an interesting adventure. The best part was getting to leave a message on my Dad's voicemail telling him I had interviewed for a position at a titty bar. Funny, he didn't mention anything about those steak dinners then.

So my sister IMs me:

So my sister IMs me: "You don't write in your blog for weeks and then I check it and there is a novel!!! " So in the interest of pith and response to the readership I will try my best to put the last week in a nutshell and start fresh. At the very least a coconut.

Psychic!
My intuition and psychic gifts are revealing themselves. I had a dream last week that my dad was sick and partially bald (He has a full head of hair in real life.) I would ask if he was okay and he would sigh and cough and say "I'm fine". When I woke up, I was a little worried. In that way you can be in waking from a dream where someone you love who is far away is ill. So I called and left a message asking if he were feeling okay and telling him to be "aware of his surroundings". (It's a Dad thing.) He didn't listen to the message until Sunday. Turns out he had been sick and was going to work anyway. Eerie, huh? But very cool. I checked the Dream Dictionary and baldness and sighing are dreams of contrary. If they are in your dreams, it means something fortuitous will happen in real life.

DanWatch
My brother has had a very active week. He bought a house; a lovely, brand new 4 bedroom property in Watauga. He has also decided to run for the US House of Representatives; District 6. So I may get to be the reckless, wild sister of a politician. Jenna Bush watch out!

I'm a web MISTRESS
Thanks to the urgings and support of my lovely cyber landlord and future BIL, I bought a few domain names for my Tex in the City project here in NYC. I am hoping to make it a surprise for our first meeting on the 18th. We will just have to see if my partners and pals check my blog until then. Today, again with the help of Cyber Landlord, I finally think I get the whole FTP thing. I made some big progress. YEEHAW! So check out the Projects and Photos page. Who knows maybe someday I will have my own Cyber City!!!

That's a wrap!!! G'night.

NOBU is down in Tribeca.

NOBU is down in Tribeca. They seated us immediately for our 6pm reservation in the back of the restaurant behind this makeshift wall made out of spaced apart twigs. It sounds weird I know...it looked really neat. But we were in a more secluded area of the restaurant. At first Felicia was a little miffed about being in a section she thought was not as cool as being in the open. It turns out we were in the section where there is always an empty table reserved for Robert DeNiro. Felicia wasn't so disappointed in our table after the waiter mentioned that. Let me stop here....we did NOT meet Robert DeNiro. It is a true sign of celebrity when you expect your restaurant to waste a table all night everynight on the off chance you'll be hungry. True Decadence. Aside from not eating with Bobby D. NOBU didn't disappoint us in any way,. shape, or form. We started off w/ cocktails. I had a "lichee Martini" which included as a garnish a peeled lichee that, as I discovered in my research for this entry, has some Feng Shui purposes of which I had no idea. Maybe that is why I dreamed I was pregnant. When peeled the lichee looks like a tiny pear. It tastes a bit like a pear too only with a smoother texture. The cocktail was yummy!

And so the decadence began. Our waiter Aaron was really great! He even gave us the heads up on a Ben Stiller reservation at about 8:30 in the main dining area. YEEHAW! We were determined to keep eating until Ben arrived. My aunts were gonna get to see somebody famous!!! That was a load off of my mind. In the interim we ate and ate and ate and ate. We split each dish we ordered; opting to order from dish to dish instead of getting a traditional appetizer, entree, etc etc. We had Nobu's famous "squid pasta". It's actually squid shaped like pasta. We had sushi, sashimi with ginger dressing salad, the squid, chilean sea bass w/ black bean salsa, wild hamachi (yellowtail), abalone, sea urchin, a special ceviche, kobe beef and probably more. Everything we ate was so enticing and so tasty, it became a sort of delectable prison with each dish sending us further and further down the spiral; each dish unbelievably tasting better than the next. Late that night after the experience I was a little concerned when I thought of all the little fishies swimming around my stomach. If it were a viable environment, I could have started my own little conservancy right there in my tummy. Or a small scale production of the "The Little Mermaid". Finally, our waiter suggested the kobe beef and that was what sent us over the edge. We had indulged too much already. It was time for dessert and coffee. We ordered this rich chocolate mousse that had candied pansies and trouffles(I think). It wasn't even on the menu; the waiter suggested it. I also ordered a side of green tea ice cream. The mousse was exquisite and the candied pansies added a really delicate flavor. The green tea ice cream was so good I was concerned Margaret was going to lick the bowl. Truth to tell, Felicia, Margaret, and I all wanted to lick that bowl. It was sooooo good. You know you wanted to, Felicia!!! So we had our coffee. Felicia and Margaret got to surreptitiously watch Ben Stiller dinind with friends as the went to "check" something with the coat check girl. I was concerned for a moment that Margaret would break the "I just want to see someone in 3D, I don't want to bother them" promise but we managed to talk her out of it. We decided one more quick cup of coffee after we paid the check and we would be off. Aaron said the pot was brewing. Odd.

Then the hostess came and dropped the bomb. She asked who made the reservation (I did) and proceeded to tell us that the reservation was for 6:00, we had been at the table for over 3 hours, they have tried to be understanding, and they have to seat the table now. Shocking! Not that the hostess did that. I actually thought she did a very good job handling a rather sticky situation. Shocking was that she was right. The restaurant opens at 6pm every night. It closes at 10:15pm. At that moment, it was 9:20pm. We had basically sat at that table the entire evening. So much for my being pissy about Robert DeNiro. So we put our tail between our legs and staggered toward the door. We were being kicked out of NOBU, currently the trendiest restaurant in NYC with Ben Stiller just two tables and a few twigs away. At first, I admit, I was a little embarassed. I embraced that feeling for a moment; let it wash over me. Then got over it. What a gas!!! We partied like rock stars at NOBU and would live to tell the tale.

The next day Margaret and Felicia got back on a plane toward Houston and I was left to go back to looking for work, catching up on my journals and things, and reminiscing about this magical weekend I shared with my aunts. To Margaret and Felicia: thank you so much for coming to town and sharing my city with me. I will remember this weekend for a long time to come. And I haven't given up on Zena. If she is alive, I will find her. One day. And maybe you can come back and we will see her. And maybe go back to NOBU for seconds...

We finally made our way

We finally made our way up onto 5th and happened across this poor soul who was trying to sell arty black and white photographs of NYC. It seemed that no one was buying and he was desperate to sell a few and go off and watch the Olympic Men's Hockey match between the Canadians and the Americans. He made my aunts deals they couldn't say no too. An 8x10 framed pic went for $10. Truth to tell, I bought two also. I know...I suck...but a girl's gotta live! By the time we got up to 60th where the park was it was about 4:30. There would be no time for Central Park this time. We went to the The Oyster Bar at the Plaza for a cocktail, stayed just long enough to see the Americans lose the Gold and finally made our way downtown to Tribeca and Nobu.

It's gotta be the

It's gotta be the shoes!

Sunday we made our way out to the Big City dressed comfortably but trendy enough for our dinner engagment. We decided to go to the park. I suggested we walk from 42nd up 5th avenue so we could pass by St. Pat's, (it was Sunday after all) and see the shops and their windows. So that is what we did. Walking across 42nd we happened upon a small shoe store with "the shoes" . They were these red numbers that looked like bowling shoes. They also had them in black. We all tried on a pair and they were soooo cute! We all ended up purchasing a pair, Felician and I a red pair and Margaret the black. I will pause for a moment while you all marvel at my fiscal irresponsibility. Heck I will marvel too and pray to the NYC God that I don't wind up in the poor house while I am at it.

Friday night before our wild

Friday night before our wild Weehawken experience, we decided we would try to get into NOBU on Sunday for lunch or dinner. Who in NYC eats on Sundays anyway? So I called, finally got through to the hostess and after being instructed to call at 3pm if I hadn't heard anything, put my name on the waiting list. I called at about 3:30 and talked to a very handsome-sounding stranger. So I put on my sexy voiceover voice and asked if anything had opened up. Alas it hadn't. But he took down my number again and promised to call if something did. He called about three minutes later. I attribute this promptness to my sexy Voiceover voice. I knew those expensive classes would get me something. So we now had 6:00 dinner reservations to NOBU. I would like to do a personal shout out to that nameless, faceless person on the phone. I could cross off one of the Big 3 objectives. Yeehaw!

It's Alphabetical Silly

So it is now about 6ish and we decide we are sick of walking around, it's getting dark, and we aren't gonna find Zena tonight. We decide to go for coffee. This proves to me more challenging than getting into Nobu. We went to the first place and Felicia actually orders but they didn't have something, I can't remember what-maybe pastries?, anyway it was something that every self respecting coffee place should have. Or maybe it was a cyber cafe and you had to pay $10 for an hour our something ridiculous like that. So we left. Then it became a deal. We couldn't find a coffee shop that had comfortable chairs or coffee. So I decided to be a little adventurous. Last February I went on a date where this guy took me to a coffee place that was just the trick. It was on the upper east side in the early eighties and I think on Second Avenue. Even though I knew this could turn into another "searching for Zena through SOHO" pilgrimage I decided to take a chance and take advantage of the FunDay Subway pass I had talked my aunts into getting. We made our way uptown. I called information from a payphone to dry to get the phone number to verify the address. NO luck. I looked in my Vindigo. NO luck. Still I trudged on. Surely this place was still there and I could find it. I prayed to the NYC God again. And out it popped! Not on 82nd where I thought but on 84th. Fortunately we walked down from 86th so my aunts never had a clue.

Finally we made it to DT UT. I had gotten the initials wrong when I was doing all my frantic checking about. Margaret and Felicia could take a load off and relax and I could revisit one of the places I went on my first date in NYC. For those of you who don't remember, this is the guy I am sure choked on a peanut and died as I never heard from him again. NEVER let a guy pick you up in a gay bar. It is just bad ju-ju. Felicia and I also split the S'mores. They actually bring fire to your table along with all the stuff so you can roast them yourself. That was yummy!

We decided to go to Times Square after, grab a quick bite and some souvenirs for my cousin Kat, and look at the big Coca-Cola sign. After we saw the lights of TS, and bought Kat's souvenirs, we decided to eat something. I thought Jo-Allen's might be a good place as Broadway stars frequent it frequently afte a show. But we came upon Sardi's and Margaret was enamored. I hadn't eaten in Sardi's since Iwas here during spring break in highschool. The food was fabulous and the waiter was really sweet. I think he was from Nepal...I don't know why. Turns out he bought and rented out a house in Dallas. He intended to live there someday. So by the time we got home it was midnight ish...maybe closer to one a.m. We popped in a movie and fell asleep dreaming of the amazing culinary experience to come. We weren't disappointed.

So Saturday rolls around and

So Saturday rolls around and I honestly didn't believe Felicia was gonna make it. I didn't actually find out about the shots until Sat morning. It was eerie being the responsible tour guides while my aunts were let loose on the big city. Boy, I am making myself sound so mature. Well, if Marg or Felicia want to refute my version they can start their own Blog. Margaret called Drunk Suzanne and surprise surprise nobody answered. Margaret, though the cruel light of day shed light on the probability of Drunk Suzanne being able to actually deliver Michael D, was a little disappointed. I really don't understand why people do that. If you think about it, light a candle for D.Suzanne. She looked like she was living a really sad life.

We finally walk out the door at about 2pm in search of Zena. Here's the thing about Zena. My aunts aren't really sure where she was. All they remember is that they were on their way to some piers (I am guessing South Street Seaport.) They decided not to go there and turned a different way. The cab driver let them out somewhere (Margaret says the Village, Felicia says not.) and there she was; Zena the Clairvoyant. She had a stained glass door that was caddy corner to the street and they had dinner somewhere near where she was. That is the info we had to go on that Saturday morning. So we went into the city and promptly started looking for a place to have lunch. We found an Asian place we thought served spring rolls like the amazing ones at Mai's in Houston. They didn't but the food was great anyway. After lunch we walked about the village in search of Zena, but alas to no avail. We walked and walked. I never did the math but I would venture we walked about 2 miles throughout the day. I was very impressed with both of my aunts and their stamina. I attribute it to the sturdy genes of our forefathers. Felicia did have some trouble as she was wearing her shiny, classy shoes and not her I'm in New York comfortable shoes. So in addition to searching for Zena, we began searching for a pair of shoes for Felicia...I then took them on a shoe tour of Soho. That's alot of shoes I can tell you. Still no Zena. So it's Saturday and I still hadn't made good on any of my aunts' objectives for their funfilled NYC trip. Maybe NOBU would come through.

I had a wild and

I had a wild and crazy weekend with my aunts Margaret and Felicia when they came up to visit. I even wrote about some of it in my journal but %$^&* blogger deleted it somehow. So I am back to square one and have been too pissed to write. Now I am back...so Here goes. Felicia and Margaret arrived on February 22 for their Weekend in NYC. They weren't terribly concerned with hitting all the monuments and sights. They only had a few small goals for this trip:

1)Find Zena the Clairvoyant; an amazingly astute tarot reader they ran into ten years ago on their last visit.
2)See someone famous; "I don't want to talk to them, or bother them, I just want to see them in 3-D."
3)Eat at Nobu; the restaurant in Tribeca of which Robert De Niro is part-owner.

I actually called NOBU before they arrived and they were all booked up for Saturday. My friend, Kambri, mentioned that they are usually booked up for months...so I had little hope of making that happen. This left the other two. Zena I didn't think would be a problem; after all they knew where it was and if she were still in business maybe Zena could tell me when I could finally put a down payment on that Village townhouse of which I occasionally dream. The famous people could be a little sketchy. The thing is, I see famous people all the time. I am almost immune to the whole thing. There is something oddly comforting in knowing that Hilary Swank wears cutoff jeans and no makeup to go shopping or her daily dose of Starbucks. So it does happen. But it is really difficult to go looking for famous people. It's always hit or miss. And the reality is, you are rarely going to see anybody in Times Square or wherever the tourists go. So I have to admit there was some pressure. But I was praying to God of NYC and hoping for something good...Heck, if worse came to worst, I would start making up seeing famous people and hope that my aunts would subconsciously catch on as their consciousness looked on in awe.

The first night of their visit they expressed an interest in going out where I lived. Weehawken. This really perplexed me at first. I have never gone out in Weehawken. It's just not that kind of town. This has been one of my frustrations about Weehawken...particularly that to see a movie in Jersey requires a car and I don't have one. Thankfully, my roomie Maia came through with a great idea. There was a sushi restaurant that overlooked the Hudson and NYC about 10 blocks away on Boulevard east. That would be an excellent opportunity to show them this fantastic view of the city right here in my neighborhood. I have to admit, I was curious about this restaurant too. I have jogged past it a few times but I have never been in there. (As I said, I never party in Weehawken.) So we set off walking toward the sushi restaurant. My aunts were suitably impressed w/ the view of NYC. I only hoped the restaurant lived up to the walk there. I was a little worried when we got there as there was no truly designated smoking area, but the sushi was amazing and the wine was great and the company was the best. I learned so many things about what's going on in both their lives and even learned things about them I never really realized. For instance, my Aunt Margaret has always taken great pictures but she also sketches. It seems that she hadn't taken pictures for a long time but she has just recently taken it up again and started drawing too. This was also her first time trying sushi. This was shocking to me as I view all of my family on that side as culinarily adventurous. Well, there is a first time for everything and she loved it. Well, she wasn't so fond of one of the rolls but the sushi was great. Felicia is starting a new job and that sounds very exciting. If you need a deal on space on a vessel from the Med to the US and back, she's your gal. After dinner we discovered there was a pool table downstairs in the bar area. Well, that was the beginning of the end of this wild night!

We decided to go play a little pool. We started with Cutthroat and ended up playing partners; Margaret and Felicia and me and this Puerto Rican Dominican named Tito. I have to say I have played the best pool of my life. It helped to have a laidback partner. He gave me great advice too. 'It's not just about hitting the balls in the pocket. You also want to set your partner up too.' He also followed his own advice which was really cool. So the Bailey's and Coffee, and Kirins were flowing and we were having a fabulous time. Tito and I ran the table for quite awhile. Felicia met a potential contact for her job. This asian guy named Deutsch who was an IT professional who also exported cars to the Philipines. He was a lovely man. He said he was 43 but he looked more like my age. By the end of the night my aunts were tanked, Margaret had met everyone of the bar's patrons bumming a cigarette and Felicia had been sureptitiously drinking shots with two couples in a booth at one end of the bar. It was time to go home. Fortunately Deutsch offered us a ride home. (I was afraid the walk would kill them.) So we said goodbye to everyone, including Suzanne-part of one of the couples Felicia and Margaret met who had a brother who worked on a movie set with Michael Douglas!!! She was sure we could get on the set tomorrow. Margaret was very pleased. I was wary. Drunk Suzanne was having trouble seeing straight. So my aunts' first night in NYC was a success and they hadn't even been to NYC yet. The next day we were on the look out for Zena and Michael Douglas!
